Watercolor illustration: A family memory beside a Tatra car.

Family photographs and a reminder: you don’t have to wait until December to look back.

A Christmas visit to Mum’s. Potato salad, carp, sweet bread and the moment when you really cannot eat another thing. Then out comes a box of old family photographs.

One picture, probably from 1982 or 1983 according to Mum, shows my great-uncle’s Tatra 603. You can’t appreciate the metallic blue in black and white. Grandad’s finger covers part of the frame too. But memories don’t need perfect composition: days by the river, outings, mushrooms in the woods and sausages over a fire.

Sometimes it helps to remember what came before. What was wonderful. What was rubbish. And what has changed. That’s the point of a retrospective: pausing long enough to look back.

We don’t have to wait until the end of the year to revisit family photographs or reflect on our work together. Retro might go out of fashion again. A regular retrospective won’t.
