Meet my running companions: Slow Down, Don’t Feel Like It and Take the Shortcut.
I no longer listen to music when I run. I have nothing against it. It can lift your mood, distract you from the effort and give an ordinary run its own soundtrack. I just wanted to listen to something else for a while: my own head.
Which is anything but silent. It produces ideas, replays yesterday and occasionally sends in the saboteurs. Slow Down. Don’t Feel Like It. Take the Shortcut. Just Walk. Quite a team.
Alongside them come thoughts that don’t get much room during the day. It’s my little retrospective on the move, with a soundtrack nobody else has chosen.
This isn’t a rule about how everyone should run. For me, the useful part is having a stretch of the day when I don’t have to consume more content. I can notice what’s already there. Running is still something of a nemesis. But I have to give it this one.
