Experiments, small groups and people willing to leave their screens. A note from September 2020.
Risk-management workshops are among my favourites. In the classroom we experiment, tackle small “engineering problems” and occasionally attempt the impossible. Think Apollo 13 on a smaller scale.
On 21 September 2020, we took the workshop online with CertiCon. The essential concepts and tools remained, but the activities had to fit screens and home environments.
We used Zoom for smaller-group work and Mentimeter to involve participants. The crucial part was the people: their contributions, patience and willingness to run around their homes when an activity called for it. No tool could have supplied that for us.
The online version had drawbacks and unexpectedly useful sides. It didn’t make every course an ideal candidate for remote delivery. It showed me that this particular workshop could work differently from what I was used to.
